Abstract The Wenchuan Earthquake happened on M ay l 2,2008 in Sichuan and was one of the most terrible disasters in recent history of China. It not only caused great casualties and huge economic loss, but also seriously destroyed mountain ecosystem and led ecological degradation in large areas. It is a precondition to understand the ecological degradation status for successful restoration and rehabilitation in the seriously affected region. This paper provides the analyses of the driving force and degradation process, gives a preliminary evaluation on the ecological damages and degradation in the seriously affcted regions(including 60 counties or cities, with a total area of 15×104 km2),and presents the key problems and major degradation features there. It is expected that this present work will promote scientific research and provide scientific information for ecological reconstruction and restoration in the region.Fig 2,Ref 13
