Comparative Research on Starvation Endurance Ability of Exotic Trachemys scripta elegans

Update time: 12/24/2012   Author:

To compare the starvation endurance ability of the exotic Trachemys scripta elegans and the native Mauremys sinensis, long periods and short periods experiments on the ability of starvation endurance between the exotic T. s. elegans and the native M. sinensis were conducted from August 2009 to April 2010 and June to August 2010.

In the long periods experiment the ration of food was restricted and in the short periods the duration of starvation was controlled. In the long periods experiment the results showed that the specific growth rate of M. sinensis in the starvation group was significantly lower than that of control group ( P < 0. 01) ,while the specific growth rate of T. s. elegans between these two groups were not significant ( P > 0. 05) .

Food conversion efficiency of T. s. elegans in starvation group was higher than that of the control, while the case reversed in M. sinensis. In the short periods experiment the results indicated that the specific growth rate of M. sinensis in starvation group was remarkablely lower than that of the control ( P < 0. 05) ,while no distinct difference existed between these two groups of T. s. elegans ( P > 0. 05) .

The liver weight of M. sinensis in starvation group was significantly lower than that of the control ( P < 0. 01) ,while in T. s. elegans no significant difference existed between these two
groups ( P > 0. 05) . Therefore, researchers from Hainan Normal University and Chengdu Institute of Biology cooperated to study this job. They concluded that the starvation endurance ability of exotic T. s. elegans were stronger than that of native M. sinensis.
