On March 26-28, 2024, the first Sino-Italian Biodiversity Conference was grandly held in the capital of Italy, Rome. Prof. Ning Wu from the Chengdu Institute of Biology (CIB), leading a delegation with 14 excellent scientists from numerous institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the conference. This conference was co-organized by the CAS and the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) of Italy, which aimed to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two parties in the field of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and jointly promote the implementation of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Prof. Ning Wu delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the conference. As a biologist, studying mountain ecosystem, ecosystem management, and landscape preservation in China and the Hindu Kush - Himalayan region, he felt excited to witness the collaboration and shared the commitment to the conservation of our planet's rich and diverse ecosystems. Prof. Ning Wu pointed out that biodiversity is the lifeblood of our world and is of great significance for sustaining the harmony between man and nature. He further introduced the history of biodiversity conservation in China, and the pivotal role played by CAS in advancing our understanding on  biological world. He also addressed that as hotspot countries in biodiversity, both China and Italy shoulder the important responsibility of jointly protecting the Earth's biodiversity. Finally, he concluded that the collaboration between CAS and NBFC will become a ray of hope in face of environmental challenges, which will provide a solution to the global biodiversity loss, climate change and sustainable development.

During the conference, Prof. Ning Wu also had in-depth exchanges and discussions with Italian experts. The participants of two sides shared knowledge, experiences and practices in biodiversity monitoring, conservation, and restoration, and conducted in-depth discussions on future cooperation. Prof. Ning Wu stated that China and Italy have broad prospects for cooperation in the field of biodiversity and hoped that both sides could further strengthen exchanges and cooperation to promote the conservation and sustainable use of global biodiversity. In addition, the conference also arranged multiple thematic reports and academic seminars focusing on conservation strategies, policies and management of forest, wetland and urban ecosystems.

During the conference, the Chinese Embassy in Italy hosted a reception for experts attending the Sino-Italian Biodiversity Conference. Ambassador Mr. Guide Jia met with delegates and delivered a speech, he stated that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Italy, which is an important testament to the long-standing cooperation and friendship between China and Italy. China was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity, and successfully hosted the COP15. Italy is also one of the countries with the highest biodiversity in the world. It is gratifying to see that Italy also attaches great importance to biodiversity conservation and has established the NBFC. He believed that with joint efforts, CAS and NBFC can achieve more fruitful results in biodiversity research and create new highlights in China-Italy cooperation.

The successful convening of this conference further demonstrated the strength and influence of Chinese research institutions in the field of biodiversity. As one of the important forces in biodiversity research in China, CIB will continue to leverage its own advantages, actively carry out international cooperation and exchanges, and contribute wisdom and strength to the conservation and sustainable use of global biodiversity.
