Recently, the meeting of the interim progress report on project“Studies in efficient plantation and reproductive mechanisms of Dendrobium”supported by Knowledge Innovation Program of The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was held in Chengdu Institute of Biology (CIB), CAS. The attendees include Dr. Liu Qing (Assistant Director of CIB, Director of Ecological Centres), Mrs. Zhang Yongmei (Director of Science and Technology department), Dr. Chun Ze (Principal Investigator of the Project), etc. At the meeting, these aspects including  the germa collections, molecular identification, pollination mechanism, plantation techniques and chemical analysis were reviewed and discussed.

The main results include five new ITS sequences found by Dr. Ma Xinrong’s Group, identification of valid pollination insect made by Dr. Pan Kaiwen’Group, related ecophysiological mechanisms during the seedling transplantation explored by Dr. Yin Chunying’s Group, large amounts of aromatic compounds in Dendrobium aurantiacum var. denneanum separated by Dr. Wang Mingqui’s Group, and effects of different light quality on tissue culture of Dendrobium conducted by Dr. Chun Ze’s Group.

Overall, the Project could benefit from such a multi-discipline organization and combination of applied and pure research, the result being that it might be a paradigm case in conservation and sustainable utilization of biological resources and also contribute the economic or social benefits.
