Chinese, German Scientists Selects Observation Site on Qomolangma

Update time: 08/06/2009

Chinese scientists and German scientists conducted site selection for the project "Surface Observation of Radiation and Turbulence Flux" on Qomolangma from July 3 to July 4, 2009.

Prof. Thomas Foken and Prof. Wolfgang Babel from Universität Bayreuth and researchers from Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) participated in the site selection.

It was the first time that Chinese scientists and German scientists had conducted research on regional surface sensible heat fluxes on Qomolangma. The selection was supported by Comprehensive Observation and Research Station on Qomolangma, CAS.

The research focused on the distribution of the sensible heat fluxes by using Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS). This can not only measure the distribution of the surface sensible heat fluxes in this region, but also validate the result of numerical simulation and satellite remote sensing.

The project was under the EU 7th Framework Program: CEOP-AEGIS (which stands for "Coordinated Asia-European long-term Observing system of Qinghai¨CTibet Plateau hydro-meteorological processes and the Asian-monsoon system with Ground satellite Image data and numerical Simulations") It is a collaborative project financed by the European Commission.
