Chengdu Institute of Biology (CIB), founded in 1958, is a public academic institution directly under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). As one of the first selected units for Knowledge Innovation Program of CAS, CIB has been dedicated in research in term of biodiversity conservation and sustainable uses of bioresources, and is scientific foundation, technical support and decision-making basis for ecological environment construction and biodiversity conservation of the upper reaches of Yangtze River as well as formation and promotion of strategic emerging biological industry.

CIB has a staff of 350, including 1 academician of CAS, 14 candidates of the “Hundred Talents Program” of CAS and 140+ senior researchers. The institute has 4 PhD programs ( botany, zoology, environmental science and pharmaceutical chemistry) and 7 academic master’s programs (zoology, botany, ecology, pharmaceutical chemistry, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering), along with 4 professional master’s programs  (pharmaceutical engineering, pharmacy, bioengineering and environmental engineering). A post-doctoral station of biology is featured. Over 300 postgraduates are enrolled.

CIB consists of Research Center of Natural Products, Research Center of Ecology, Research Center of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Research Center of Agricultural Biotechnology and Laboratory of Amphibians and Reptiles. It is the supporting institution for National Engineering Research Center for Natural Medicine, CAS Key Laboratory of Mountain Ecological Restoration and Bio-resource Utilization, CAS Key Laboratory of Environmental and Applied Microbiology, and Sichuan Translational Medical Research Hospital of CAS.

The Public Experiment Center of CIB is well equipped with sophisticated instruments such as NMR spectrometer (600 MHz, 400 MHz), high resolution mass spectrometer, automatic amino acid analyzer and multifunctional microscope. CIB has 8 Ecology field stations, such as Chengdu Plain Agricultural Ecology Research Station, CASMaoxian Mountain Ecosystem Research Station  and Ruoergai Alpine Wetland Ecosystem Research Station. The institute has a collection of over 100 thousand amphibian and reptile specimens, amount and species of which rank first in China and second in Asia in the field it belongs to. Besides, 200 thousand herbariums are deposited.

Technological research achievements of CIB have exceeded 300 ever since its foundation with more than 100 awarded prizes awarded by the province or ministry. Industrialization of many such achievements featuring Di'aoXinxue Kang (a medicine for cardiovascular diseases) has been successfully realized, contributing considerably to socio-economic development of the country.

CIB has developed substantial and solid cooperation with universities and scientific research institution in over 20 countries, e.g. US, UK, GermanyFrance and Russia. Strategic partnership with domestic universities, institutions and companies has been established also.

CIB is registered supporting institution of Sichuan Ecological Society, publishing Asian Herpetological Research and Chinese Journal of Applied and Environmental Biology.
